NSW:1000 steel jobs cut in NSW and Vic
About one thousand jobs will be cut from the Australian steel sector today, as BlueScope
Steel announces the closure of one of the nation's three remaining blast furnaces.
Media reports say about 800 BlueScope Steel jobs will be axed in NSW and 200 in Victoria
as the rising Australian dollar and surging raw materials prices affect the steel-making
sector.
The company will close its No 6 blast furnace at Port Kembla near Wollongong south
of Sydney and the Western Port hot strip mill at Hastings east of Melbourne.
The federal government is expected to announce an assistance package for workers being
laid off and other short-term measures.

Qld: Be careful - BSA warns building firm's customers
BRISBANE, Feb 18 AAP - Queensland's building industry regulator has issued a warning
to lenders, contractors and customers dealing with a Sunshine Coast building company closely
linked to a firm that collapsed earlier this month.
Building Services Authority (BSA) chief Ian Jennings today urged anyone dealing with
Integra Developments Pty Ltd, which shared office space and staff with failed construction
firm Real Property Constructions (RPC), to be cautious.
"BSA warns all persons dealing with Integra Developments Pty Ltd to exercise extreme
caution and seek legal advice to protect their interests," Mr Jennings said.
Integra's director Lesley Enever is the partner of Dennis Musca, who ran RPC before
the company collapsed earlier this month leaving 233 homes unfinished in Brisbane, Maryborough,
Hervey Bay and on the Sunshine Coast.
Mr Musca is now facing a permanent ban from the building industry.
Ms Enever also is a former director of RPC and the two firms shared office space, key
employees, systems and accountants, Mr Jennings said.
"Integra Developments Pty Ltd is also involved with some of the same marketing and
investment companies which Real Property Constructions Pty Ltd was involved with before
its collapse," he said.
Mr Jennings said some consumers who had contracts with RPC had reported that Integra
staff had contacted them regarding completion of their homes.

WA:Naked gunman 'stressed' by detention
PERTH, Aug 26 AAP - A naked man who sent downtown Perth into lockdown after climbing
to the top of a billboard holding a replica gun, has post-traumatic stress after years
in detention, says his lawyer.
In Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday, Sayeed Mehman, 38, pleaded guilty to being
armed in public in a way that caused fear.
On July 17, Mehman climbed atop a large billboard in in the Perth CBD, stripped naked
and paraded up and down with a replica handgun.
Police locked down the area, closing a section of Wellington Street while deploying
Tactical Response Group officers.
Commuter trains were also halted until negotiators persuaded Mehman to drop the replica
handgun and come down.
In court on Thursday, Mehman's lawyer said he was an Australian citizen who had never
been convicted of an offence.
She said he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after spending four years in an
immigration detention centre.
The mental illness he suffered did not pose a danger to society, she said.
Mehman's bail was extended and he will be sentenced on October 7 when the magistrate
will consider new psychiatric reports on his mental state.

He's hoping to take the Liberals to preferences for the first time in the seat's 60

Eight other candidates are standing in Higgins .. including an independent climate

WA: Police officer shoots himself at police station
PERTH, Dec 23 AAP - The shooting death of a police officer at a West Australian police
station was a tragic event in the lead-up to Christmas, WA Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan
says.
Police said the 36-year-old police sergeant from Collie, south of Perth, shot himself
with a police issue firearm in the station's armoury room on Monday.
The officer left behind a wife and four young children and they and his fellow officers
were being offered counselling, a police spokesman said.
WA Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said local officers were shocked.
"This has affected all of the police officers and their families," he told ABC Radio.
"It's a very tragic situation that's occurred at a difficult time of the year when
we're moving up to Christmas."
The officer joined the force in 1993 and had been stationed in Collie for 12 months,
a spokesman said.
An internal police unit was investigating the death but it was not being treated as suspicious.

Fed: Rudd to hold first cabinet meeting
CANBERRA, Dec 6 AAP - Prime Minister Kevin Rudd holds his first cabinet meeting today,
with his planned education revolution expected to top the agenda.
Twelve days after Labor's election victory, Mr Rudd and his senior ministers will gather
in Brisbane this morning to discuss implementing the new government's policies.
Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has indicated the government intends to get key
elements of its "education revolution" underway before Christmas.
These include plans to give every student in Years Nine to 12 access to their own computer
at school, and to establish trades training centres in schools to encourage young people
back into traditional trades.
Mr Rudd has also promised to release his ministerial code of conduct, part of restoring
principles of Westminster democracy he believes were eroded during the Howard years.
Under former prime minister John Howard, cabinet usually met in Sydney unless federal
parliament was sitting.
Mr Rudd has said he wants his cabinet ministers to meet in various cities and towns
across the country, starting with today's meeting in his home town of Brisbane.
He has also promised to hold briefings for the media after each cabinet discussion.
A press conference is expected to follow today's meeting.

Qld: Accused terrorist to appeal fail bail application
BRISBANE, Dec 21 AAP - A Brisbane high school teacher accused of terrorism charges
will appeal his failed Supreme Court bail application next year.
John Howard Amundsen today sought a review of his case before Chief Magistrate Marshall
Irwin in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.
Amundsen, 40, from the northside suburb of Aspley, is charged with using false documents
to obtain explosives and preparing to commit an act of terrorism.
He was arrested eight months ago after police uncovered 53kg of explosives at his home.
Amundsen, representing himself, had wanted to make an urgent bail application in the
magistrates court, but was informed by the chief magistrate that since he had started
the process in the Supreme Court, he needed to continue it there.
On Tuesday this week, Supreme Court Justice John Muir refused Amundsen's bail application
and remanded him in custody.
Amundsen said today one of his main concerns was his inability to make international
phone calls from the prison system.
He said this was preventing him from contacting potential United States-based witnesses,
who had special effects expertise which was crucial to his defence.
"I will certainly be raising my difficulties in accessing overseas witnesses in my
appeal," Amundsen said.
Mr Irwin adjourned the case for further review on January 12 next year.

Fed: Nelson won't confirm planned boost to army numbers

Fed: Nelson won't confirm planned boost to army numbers
CANBERRA, Aug 15 AAP - Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has refused to confirm reports
that the army may be expanded by 20 per cent over the next decade to about 30,000.
He described predictions of the expansion today as "nothing more than speculation",
although the issue is tipped to come later today before federal cabinet's national security
committee for sign-off.
The government has been reviewing the size of the defence force as troops are stretched
across international deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and Solomon Islands.
Changes expected before the national security committee today include force expansion
and an easing of long-standing bans on the recruitment of young people with treatable
medical conditions such as asthma, or those who admit previous drug use.
They also include measures to enhance personnel retention rates including bonuses for
those with important skills and a more family friendly postings policy.
The Australian Army numbers around 25,000 fulltime personnel. It struggles to meet
current recruitment targets.
Dr Nelson foreshadowed changes late last month when he said he was finalising the defence
strategic policy for the coming decade.
Boosting the size of the military made sense, he said.
"When you look at our responsibilities in our region, our responsibilities to protect
our borders and then, of course, these global conflicts where Australia's values and interests
need to be protected, there is an argument for us to consider the size of our Australian
Defence Force," he said at the time.
He said the ADF received 80,000 recruitment inquiries a year and about 18,000 serious
applications.
"We're taking 7,000 when we need 8,000 and there's a variety of things that I am determined
to do which mean having better career management for people we bring in to the Australian
Defence Force, better management of military justice issues."
He said examining the long-term size of the ADF was an obvious task for the government.
Dr Nelson said about 4,000 of the 51,000-strong Australian Defence Force were currently
deployed overseas.
Australia has also been asked to contribute to a planned international peacekeeping
force for southern Lebanon.

TRAIN DERAILS, SPILLING CHEMICALS.(News)
Byline: P-I news services
TEXAS -- A train hauling chemicals derailed in a heavily wooded area near Magnolia yesterday, causing some cars to leak toxic chemicals, police said. No one was injured. Twenty-one cars on an 84-car Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed. The cause was not known.
Authorities constructed a makeshift roadway to the train. When they reached the site after 12 hours, they found that about 11,000 gallons of acetic anhydride and 23,000 gallons of No. 2 ethylhexyl acrylate had spilled. Both chemicals can irritate skin, eyes and the respiratory system.
EPA officials said the spill did not pose a threat to residents. Some of the 70 homeowners living nearby evacuated voluntarily but all had returned home late yesterday, authorities said.
Officer charged in traffic deaths
NEW YORK - A van driven by a drunken off-duty police officer hit and killed a pregnant woman, her young son and her teenage sister, and the woman's baby died soon after being delivered alive, officials said.
Maria Herrera, 24, who was eight months pregnant, died after she was hospitalized Saturday night. Doctors delivered her baby boy after the accident, but he died yesterday morning.
Herrera's sister, 16-year-old Dilcia Pena, died at the scene. Herrera's 4-year-old son, Andy, died about an hour later at the hospital. They were crossing the street to visit the sisters' parents when they were hit by a van.
The officer, Joseph Gray, was arrested at the scene, Detective Eugene Canapi said. Gray, a 15-year veteran, was charged with drunken driving, manslaughter, reckless endangerment and reckless driving, Canapi said. Gray was also suspended from the force.
Warning on `Code Red II' worm
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Computer security experts warned yesterday of the spread of a new, destructive worm that is similar to "Code Red," which infected computers around the world last week.
The new worm, dubbed "Code Red II," moves faster than Code Red but can still be stopped by downloading a software patch for some Microsoft operating systems.
Code Red II attacks the same Internet-connected computers that were vulnerable to Code Red in the same fashion. Instead of just defacing Web sites and trying to spread itself, however, the new worm leaves a "back door" open on infected computers.
Web-site administrators running Microsoft Windows NT and 2000 operating systems, along with the Internet Information Services software, should download Microsoft's patch from the company's Web site. Users running Windows 95, 98 or Me are not vulnerable.

General Dynamics To Resell Clarent's Voice-Over-IP Solutions to Federal, State and Local Government Agencies.
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
ANNAPOLIS JUNCTION, Md. & REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 2001--General Dynamics Electronic Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), has signed an agreement with Clarent(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:CLRN) that will provide federal, state and local government agencies easier access to Clarent's line of voice-over-Internet Protocol ("VoIP") solutions for communicating voice, data and fax transmissions over intranets and the Internet.
The agreement allows General Dynamics to act as the first government-focused value-added reseller of Clarent's products and services, which currently are used by more than 300 major telecommunication carriers and service providers worldwide. Government customers now have the option of expanding and improving their telecommunications networks and services with Clarent's IP-based solutions, keeping pace with commercial trends that have seen IP-based phone-to-phone traffic grow from none in 1995 to 15.8 billion minutes in 2000 - 31 percent of which traveled over Clarent powered networks, according to a market report by iLocus.com.
Clarent's products transfer voice, data and fax using packet-switched technology that breaks information into packets, sends them, and reassembles them at the destinations. This Internet Protocol (IP) method is efficient because it takes up network space only during transmission, and allows the simultaneous transmission of voice, fax and data over the same network.
"This is an example of how General Dynamics helps government customers obtain the latest commercial technologies," said Dave Johnson, vice president of Electronic Systems' Signals Intelligence business organization, in Annapolis Junction, Md. "Not only do we build and integrate custom computer and telecommunications systems for national security customers, we also serve as a value-added broker of market-proven communications solutions such as Clarent's IP solutions."
"General Dynamics' reputation and global reach will allow federal agencies and state governments to reap the benefits and efficiencies of IP-based communications that Clarent's commercial customers are enjoying already. The relationship also opens up a key vertical market for Clarent," said Jerry Chang, Clarent Corporation's CEO.
General Dynamics Electronic Systems will offer Clarent's solutions to its current customers and the two companies will jointly present product information at leading government trade shows.
About Clarent
Clarent Corporation (Nasdaq:CLRN) is a world leader in providing intelligent, software-driven products for new generation, IP-based communications networks. Clarent solutions enable interconnection among communications service providers' disparate networks and foster the creation of global footprints for more than 300 telecom service providers worldwide, including AT&T, NTT and China Telecom. Clarent's software platform and softswitch encourage innovation by allowing carriers to develop multiple new features for consumers and enterprises.
